| During a 15 days period prior to the 1975 breeding season five ecologycal areas suitable for livestock production were sampled in continental Magallanes.Weights of ten percent of the total amount of hoggets going into the breeding groups and also some information on reproductive management were obtained at 12ranches.Lambing percentages were collected at docking, on january and february 1976.It was observed that the average weight in this type of animals is above 40 Kg atall ranches, but in those places at the typical steppe, this average was 32 Kg, being thisthe only area where 7.7% of hoggets weight 40 Kg, or more. In the steppe-shrub association, and the pre-Andes areas, hoggets weighing 40 Kg or more acoounted from53.3 up to 85.87%.In the typical steppe area, lambing percentage taken at docking was below 30%,being 58 to 75% in those places where the average weight was 40 to 45 Kg before breedingseason started. At places where differences in weights were small (43-44) there was no significantdifférence at lambing (75-73%).Reproductive and nutritionaL management for 2-tooth ewes was considered inadequatedat all areas. |
