During 1982 and 1983, a garlic disease was observed in the fields and storages, in the area of the Valparaíso and the Metropolitan Regions. About 10% of the garlic cloves from farmers store-houses showed brown esions on the storage leaf, sometimes enveloped by a blue-green mass of fungus spores. Under field conditions, chlorotic, stunted and wilted plants were observed. Based on symptomatology, on cultural and morphological characteristics, and on pathogenicity test, it was shown that the causal agent of the blue mold disease in our contry is Penicillium corymbiferum Westling.
