During tha 1990/91 season a disease was detected for the flrst time allecting faba beans at the location of Cato (36º 32' south latitude and 71º 55' west longitude), VIII Region of Chile, South America. Sunken dark lesions on leaves, stems and pods of allected plants were observed. Abundant black pycnidia, which contined hyaline straight or slightly curved conidia, were formed on pods and stems of allected plants. The fungus Ascochyta fabae was grown in PDA 2% and/or faba bean agar where it formed abundant pycnidia. Faba bean, bean, lentil, pea and chickpea seedlings, aproximately 2 week old, were artifocially inoculated with conidium suspension of the fungus, and consecuently field symptoms were reproduced only on faba bean plants, including the formation of pycnidia. A. fabae was only reccvered from the inoculated faba bean plants. These results conformed the specificity of the pathogen which can only infect faba bean plants. This is the flrst report of A. fabae in Chile.
