A new pathogen on raspberry canes, was detected during the spring of 1986, in the X Region of Chile (Iat. 39º to 41º S). The firsts symptoms found were dark brown necrotic lesions on the canes, these becoming silvery, due to bark raising. Small black acervulus of the fungus could be observed at this stage. Lesions enlarged along the cane, producing bark breaking in the infected areas. Death of some buds and canes can also occur. By the isolation, multiplication, identification, and inoculation of the fungus in healthy plants that showed the same symptoms, and re-isolation and re-identification of the fungus, the species Seimatosporium lichenicola (Cda.) Shoemaker et Müller, was determined.
