ABSTRACT
THE VARIABILITY OF WINGED APHID TIME-CATCH FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS BY MEANS OF YELLOW WATER TRAPS

Alberto G. Cubillos P.1

The variability of capture of alate aphids by means of Moericke type yellow water traps was studied on a potato field at Carillanca Experiment Station in Temuco. Six traps were placed within a potato field at least 50 m from any crop border. The aphid activity was measured daily during twelve weeks.
The time-catch distribution of the six traps did not differ. Any specific parameter of center tendency of the distribution was reached within a seven day period with 95% confidence.
A single trap would suffice if the aim of the study is to establish the general patern of alate aphid activity during the summer. This trap should be located on the gravity center of the field. If the study requires more precise measurements, two traps located on a transect following the wind main direction and crossing the gravity center of the field would be enough.
