Rubia is a low yielding oat land variety very susceptible to lodging, grown in Chile from Malleco to Aysen. The present study was aimed to establish the agronomic variability of Rubia and to select pure lines, with high yielding potential, resistan to lodging. Pure line selection was highly efficient as breeding method. AVE-36 resulted the best homogeneous pure line. It outyielded Rubia. Rubia consisted of a heterogeneous mixture of pure lines that differed in growth habit, lodging resistance, emergence of panicle, crown rust susceptiblility, plant height and yielding ability.
