In strawberry plants, variety "Tioga" grown in the greenhouse the acropetal and basipetal translocation, as well as the persistence of the systemic fungicides Benlate (benomyl), Tecto 60 (thiabendazole), Cercobin M (methythiophanate), CELA W 524 (triforine), Derosal (carbendazole) and DAM 18654 (cypendazole) were studied. Benlate and Tecto 60 were alos used as treatments being acidified with hydrochloric acid. The effectiveness of control of Verticillium sp. Nees ex Wallr. of these products was studied in inoculated plants. Translocation was biologically evaluated by means of the agar plate diffusion technique, using the fungus Verticillium sp. To determine the acropetal translocation and persistence, the products were applied to the soil in a single dose. Basipetal translocation and persistence was determined by dipping the foliage of the plants in a suspension of the fungicide. In both cases, plants were planted in pots a week before treatment.
All the products studied moved acropet ally in strawberry plants. The fungicides Benlate and acidified Tecto 60 had the greatest persistence in the plants, as they were detected both in petioles and roots 20 days after their application. On the other hand, only acidified Benlate, Tecto 60, acidified Tecto 60 and Cercobin moved basipetally. They were detected biologically in those organs for a time span varying for each products. The basipetal movement of acidified Tecto 60 was faster than that of Tecto applied to the leaves without altering its pH. 60 In the inoculation and effectiveness of control experiment, nontreated plants showed verticillose symptoms 60 to 80 days after inoculation. During this period, plants treated with the fungicides showed phytotoxic symptoms. Only a few plants survived to the rates of Benlate, Derosal and DAM 18654. But since these few plants were not affected by Verticillium sp. it is concluded that these fungicides can control the disease.
