| The soft red winter wheat genotypes 'Vermillion', 'Séneca', 'Knox 62', 'Benhur','Arthur' and Purdue 5215 were crossed in a diallel system to estimate hybrid vigorand gene action in the F1and F2 generations subjected to emergence under stress conditions.Parents, F1 and F2 were exposed to 2 levels of temperature; 3.5 and 8.5°C., and2 levels of moisture, 3 and 5 atmospheres of tension, to determine rate of emergence andpercent emergence. F1 and F2generation hybrids emerged faster and better than mid-parentsand better parents. Additive, and additive and non-additive effects controlled theexpression of these 2 characters. Overdominance, and a degree of complementary interactionwere detected. Narrow sense heritabilities for emergence rate were low in F1,and high in F2; the estimates were intermediate and consistent for percent emergencein both generations. |
