More than 200 samples of wheat and barley plants, from 57 different places, were studied during the season 1975-76. Many samples showed symptoms very similar to BYDV.Diagnosis of the disease was based on transmission experiment and electron microscopy. - Transmission experiment with the viruliferous aphid species Macrosiphum (Sitobion)avenae Fabr. incited, after 13 days, chlorosis of the leaves, on caged wheatand barley plants (and some stunting on barley).M. avenae is one of the aphid species important as pests of cereals in Chile. - Electron microscopy (thin cutting and negative staining). The virus (BYDV) presencewas revealed in the leaf phloem-cells of wheat and barley, showing sphericalparticles about 24-27 nm in diameter. |
