Three trials were carried out in Osorno and Llanquihue (southern Chile) in order to study the following aspects of the yellow lupin crop (Lupinus luteus L.): I. Evaluation of the crop in demostrative sowing (Llanquihue). II. Response of yellow lupine to five levels of phosphorus and two levels of sulphur. III. Evaluation of a mixed sward established with oats or lupins.
lt is concluded in the first and second trials that lupin can be used especially ashead of rotation after natural sward in high fertility soils, or after a crop well fertilized,particularly when nitrogen fertilization has been low, since lupin is able to fixN in the soil. There was no response to P fertilization. A positive response to S ocurredin one locality and a P X S interaction in another locality, and a depressiveeffect with the P200 X S50 level of fertilization. An application of P at levels of50 to 100 units with 50 units of S appears suitable until new information is obtainedincluding P, K and S. In "red clay" soil series (rojo arcillosos) yields of forageare only half those obtained in "trumao" soils (volcanic origin).It was found in the last trial that a mixed sward can be well established in associationwith lupin an the latter appears to fix N be used by the sward.As a green suplement, lupin can be harvested during late summer but its best useis considered to be as a grain-producing crop, particularly due to its high contentin protein.
